silver spring, maryland this morning. a police involved shooting on woodland drive. police were responding to the home of a plan who was making threats. >> kristen fisher will join us with an update from the scene so keep it here on 9news now. later today a neurologist will re-examine rg iii after he suffered a mild concussion in yesterday's game. he got drilled by sean witherspoon. griffin was able to walk off the field on his own accord, clearly shaken up. griffin did not return to the game. a neurologist examined him and diagnosed the concussion. >> wasn't sure what quarter it was, at that time when he wasn't sure what the score was, we knew he had a mild concussion, at least according to the doctors. feels good right now. a lot better right now, but that was the situation why he didn't go back into the game. >> definitely tough to watch. the redskins lost to the

falcons 24-17. we'll have highlights from the game later in sports. jerry sandusky faces his sentencing tuesday. the former penn state assistant coach was convicted last spring of 45 child sexual abuse crimes. he could spend the rest of his life in prison. his first stop will be camp hill state prison where he will undergo test comping classification. there are lawsuits also filed by his victims against penn state. they are expected to total in the millions of dollars. a fight with an acquaintance leaves an alexandria man dead. police were called to the 5400 block of broadmoor street sunday morning. they say 30-year-old mark ives died as a result of some sort of trauma to the body.

back. we are following breaking news out of silver spring maryland. there has been a police involved shooting. montgomery county police responded to a home of a man who is making threats. >> kristen fisher joins us live from the scene with the very latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. it is a very active crime subpoena as montgomery county police continue to investigate what happened at the same time as the suspect as a suspect who

was shot by police is fighting for his life. this investigation is continuing. you can see exactly what is happening. i just got off the phone with captain paul starks. he told me this happened around 3:15 this morning. the suspect called 911 and said he wanted to harm himself and possibly others. police then got a tip that he might be at his girlfriend's house. when police got here the suspect was outside in a back stairwell, well the home itself was locked. police were telling the people inside, possibly the girlfriend inside to keep it locked. they did not want this man getting inside. while police were trying to distract and communicate with the man making these threats outside and he was on the back side of the house, they were able to sneak out the woman and her two children.

sometime after that, once everybody inside was taken out safely, at some point captain paul stark says for some reason the suspect engaged the officers and that is when he was shot. we don't know if the person shot at the officers or made some sort of threatening comment. that is still under investigation. all we know is he was shot by police officers is now fighting for his life in the hospital. still a very active crime scene. back to you. welcome back. we may see an early peek of sunshine, overall the clouds will rule the day. highs in the low to mid-50s. watch out the development of a few showers as we go throughout the afternoon. >> you just heard our kristen fisher on the scene of police

promise. >> obviously the governor knows his tax cut isn't too popular. so a few wicks before the election he is trying to pretend it doesn't exist. >> reporter: romney is in virginia today if a rally and what is being called a major foreign policy address. excerpts from the speech have already been released. romney witness a change of course in the middle east, including tougher sanctions on iran. and he will call on the u.s. to work with other nations to arm rebels in syria with weapons that can defeat the presence's army. -- the president's army. romney promised to be a strong international leader if elected. >> when i am president i will take the care it takes to rebuild our principles and restore the principles of main america so far. >> reporter: the republican nominee also couldn't resist taking another shot at the president's debate performance. >> now today, days later, we are hearing his excuses and next january we'll be watching him

shanendoah valley in dc. you'll notice the raindrops this afternoon. 39 right now, almost 3 a moment ago. 41 in fairfax and 40 in bowie. a chilly morning. we have good visibility, clouds starting to move in wii temperature of 46. a north wind at 9 and humidity this morning 79%. a big chill has moved toward texas. they are going to recover nicely this afternoon. they got 30s in north texas. chicago, detroit north carolina expecting showers only 49 this afternoon. the rain that we are looking at is this system coming out of the mississippi and tennessee valley. see the rains in northern mississippi through tennessee now. i think some of this could even be here by lunch time, if not

later this morning in areas west of town as it is racing quickly off toward the east and northeast. put our futurecast in motion. especially in northern virginia, shanendoah valley, that will be the case through the afternoon hours as this stays generally north and west of washington. that doesn't mean you are not going to see a couple of showers here, just looks lick the better chance will be north and west. obviously baltimore is playing the yankees in game two of their series, could be problems more tonight. showers tonight down in the 40s, some 30s north and west but nothing frozen. an early shower south and east tomorrow. sunshine in the afternoon. 5 to maybe 60. wednesday looking very, very nice. by thursday upper 60s. friday slight chance of a shower and the weekend looks all right.

the redskins were playing in their second home game in five weeks. entering the game with the falcons, washington had lost seven straight at home but the buzz surrounding robert griffin 3 has kept everyone exide. as he scrambled for yards he got drilled. sean witherspoon, nailing griffin there. he doesn't move at first. he ended up walking off the field of his own accord, but he is clearly shaken up, he would not return to the game. he was seen buy a neurologist and was diagnosed with a concussion. redskins lose 24-17, but the concern was all about rg iii. >> he wasn't sure what quarter it was. he wasn't sure what the score was. we knew he had a mild concussion, according to the doctors. fields good right now. a lot better right now, but

now breaking news out 6 forest glenn -- of forest glenn, maryland. montgomery county police say they were responding to the home of a man making threats. >> kristen fisher joins us live with more on this developing situation. what is the latest here? >> reporter: this all started with a very bizarre phone call to montgomery county police around 3:15 this morning. a man called police and said he wanted to harm him he feel and possibly others. his girlfriend's home was just at the intersection of woodlawn and fawn na lane. the man was outside the home in a back stairwell. inside a woman, possibly his girlfriend and two children. police were able to get the woman and kids inside and at some point the man came up the back stairwell and started to

engage the officers. now i'm not quite sure exactly what engage means. montgomery county police weren't able to say if the man shot at police officers or if he possibly threatened him with a firearm. that is all part of this ongoing investigation what we do know is he was shot, he is now fighting for his life in the hospital as the investigation continues in silver springs. police in morgans town, west virginia west virginia had their hands full after rout by fans went on a fort worth of destruction after a football game. west virginia beat texas, the crowds started fires, fights and tried to overturn vehicles. police were pelted by bottles and rocks as they tried to

control this crowd. >> fights caused tear gas and pepper spray, it is sad to say. i wish we could handle celebrating. >> officers used pepper spray to quell the crowd. five people were charged with arson related offenses. police arrested ten others on charges including alcohol related crimes, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. today and tuesday candidates will prepare for the big match up. >> politicians from both parties are now weighing in on who they think are going to come out on top. >> the count down to joe wide spend paul ryan's face off in danville, kentucky has begun. the candidates are preparing to go head to head.

to it. foreign and domestic policy issues will be subjects in the debates. a fallen power line disrupts service on metro's red line. the power line came down near the metro station and that caused the transit agency to shut down service at 4:30 sunday afternoon. we are told the downed power line was cleared from the tracks. red line service was sumed after a few hos. they made e ultimate sacrifice, and over the weekend, family and friends of the nation's fallen firefighters gathered to pay tribute to those who died in the line of duty hundreds of firefighters, friends and family members were at the national fallen firefighters memorial weekend.
